The APCC describes Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comment as highly indecent, unconstitutional, and disrespectful toward Assamese women

GUWAHATI — The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has filed multiple police complaints against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his alleged derogatory remarks against women in the state. The complaints, lodged across various police stations, claim Sarma’s comments were not only insulting to women but also aimed at undermining the dignity of mothers in Assam.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the APCC alleged that Chief Minister Sarma made offensive statements questioning whether Congress leaders were “born from their mother’s womb”. The APCC described the comment as highly indecent, unconstitutional, and disrespectful toward Assamese women.

Krishna Das, president of the scheduled caste department of the APCC, lodged an FIR against Sarma for insulting women belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) communities.

Similarly, in Karbi Anglong, the district media department president of the APCC, Cherisma Lengthepi, also filed a complaint condemning the chief minister’s remarks as an insult to the tribal women of Assam.

The Congress party demanded immediate action against Sarma. Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur Goswami led a protest, burning an effigy of Sarma and submitting a letter to the National Commission for Women, seeking action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.

The state chapter of the BJP has condemned the FIRs and accused the Congress of hypocrisy. It recalled that during the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress regime in 2007, the state had witnessed a shameful incident when an Adivasi girl was paraded naked on the streets of Guwahati in broad daylight.

In a statement, state BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami stated that under the leadership of Dr Sarma, the BJP government has been working tirelessly to empower the women of Assam and transform them into a symbol of awakened womanhood. He alleged that the Congress, instead of supporting these efforts, has been engaged in “continuous conspiracies” to obstruct the chief minister’s initiatives.
