HYDERABAD — For the first time, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi spoke in ‘favour’ of Congress forming the government and also hinted his support to the grand old party to keep BJP out of power.
Asaduddin Owaisi said that if Congress party wins 120 seats in Lok Sabha elections, it will be seriously in the game of government formation along with other parties.
Participating in a Town Hall programme with young electorates from his constituency Hyderabad, Owaisi did not rule out the possibility of two possible major winners from the two Telugu states extending support to the Congress party if it wins more than 120 seats.
“If Congress wins 120 seats then the game is on”, he said. “Let the Congress cross 150 seats then you become the Chowkidar (watchman) and all chowkidars are not chor (thieves)”, he said.
When asked whether in such a case TRS will support Congress at the Centre, Owaisi said, “If Congress gets 120 seats then TS (Telangana state) wins. There will also be a win for Jaganmohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh. The two Telugu states are going to benefit”, he said.
This is the first time that Owaisi, a harsh and bitter critic of Congress has hinted at the possibility of his two friends K Chandrasekhar Rao of TRS and Jaganmohan Reddy of YSRCP lending support to Congress-led coalition at the Centre. This was also being seen as an indication that Owaisi himself will be in the same league.
Owaisi exuded confidence that not only TRS and MIM were going to sweep all 17 seats in Telangana, but YSRCP was also going to win at least 21 seats of the total 25 Lok Sabha seats in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
“I and other leaders of MIM are going to campaign in other parts of Telangana. Similarly if Jaganmohan Reddy seeks my help I will definitely go to Andhra Pradesh”, he said.
“If KCR and Jagan win big in this elections they will be able to do much more for their states”, he added.
Owais also targetted BJP saying the party had failed on all the fronts despite getting a clear majority in 2014. He said said the country needs a coalition of regional parties and the next government will not be formed without regional parties.
On another question about the possibility of TRS extending support to the BJP if Congress fails to win, Asaddudin Owaisi exuded confidence it will not happen. He pointed out that KCR was particular in assembly elections that the BJP must lose in Telangana.
“In the personal meetings with me he told me clearly, Asad bhai, come what may, the BJP must not win and I want your assurance and help. Results will vouch for this as it was not Congress that defeated BJP in Telangana”, he said. He also pointed out that in Assembly elections in December last, BJP forfeited deposits in 111 constituencies including that of the state BJP President.
