Communal Clashes Erupt in Vadodara on Diwali Night, 19 Detained

VADODARA — Communal clashes broke out on Diwali night over the bursting of firecrackers in a locality in Gujarat’s Vadodara city and coninued till Tuesday morning. The police have rounded up at least 19 from both the sides while the process of identifying them is currently underway, according to sources.

The clashes erupted on Monday night ( 12.45 am Tuesday) in the communally sensitive Panigate locality.

Addressing the local media, Vadodara Deputy Commissioner of Police, Yaspal Jaganiya said: “The exact reason for the violence is yet to be ascertained. The moment police learnt of the incident, personnel from across the city were moved to spot and the situation was brought under control. A petrol bomb was hurled at the police from the terrace of the house, one person is held in this regard,” reports IANS.

The person who allegedly hurled a petrol bomb at policemen from the third floor of his house nearly an hour after the clash broke out was also detained, Vadodara Deputy Commissioner of Police Yashpal Jaganiya told PTI.

However, according to Police, no body was injured during the clash and a motorcycle parked in the area caught fire after a rocket firecracker fell on it.

Officials said street lights were cut off before the clash broke out, after which rioters from the two sides started hurling stones.
