NEW DELHI – The car of Asaduddin Owaisi was, on Thursday, fired at by some unidentified assailants on the highway near Chhajarsi Toll in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place when the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen supremo was on his way to Delhi after a poll rally in Meerut.

Posting visuals of the car with bullet marks on its body on his Twitter handle, the Hyderabad MP informed that luckily no one was injured in the attack while the tyres of the vehicle burst.

“Some time ago, my car was fired at the Chhajarsi toll gate. 4 rounds fired. There were 3-4 people, all of them ran away and left their weapons there. My car got punctured, but I got out in another car and left,” Owaisi tweeted.

“We are all safe. Alhamdulillah,” he wrote thanking the Almighty God for his safe return along with his fellow travellers.

Upon reaching his official residence in the National Capital, Owaisi interacted with the media demanding a probe into the incident by the Election Commission (EC). He pointed out that it was the job of the government to institute an independent investigation into the attack. “I will meet the parliament speaker and write a letter to the Election Commissioner.”

Recalling the attack, the AIMIM MP said that after leaving Kithor for Delhi and on reaching the toll gate near Pilkhuwa their convoy of four cars came under the attack.

Visuals doing rounds on the social media showed policemen guarding the site after the attack.

“A Scorpio vehicle was in front of my car and then there were two more Fortuners. As we reached near the toll gate, the cars slowed down and suddenly there was a loud thud, followed by another sound. I asked my driver what happened, he said we are under attack. As we left the spot we heard another sound. I think there were three to four rounds of firing. My car has two bullet holes on the left side and also a mark on the mud guard,” Owaisi recounted.

After the firing, Owaisi changed the vehicle on the flyover ahead as one of the tyres of his car was punctured. “The Fortuner behind my car hit a scooter with two men, one wearing a red hood and another a white jacket. As they fell down, the man in white jacket fired upon the Fortuner. I spoke with the SP and he said he has recovered his arms and scooter,” informed Owaisi.

Owaisi asserted that such attacks won’t lower their spirit.

The attack comes days after Hindutva monks in Allahabad made incendiary speeches against Muslims as they targeted Owaisi for his remarks critical of the UP Police.

Commenting on the attack, journalist Aditya Menon said that a few politicians were at the receiving end of incitement to violence as Owaisi.

In September 2021, a group of Hindu Sena men vandalised his Delhi home, damaging a door and windows, the nameplate and hurled an axe at his house amidst shouts of “jihadi”.
