BHILAI – In a significant development underscoring communal harmony and justice, a delegation representing the Muslim community from various parts of Chhattisgarh met with Governor Bishwabhusan Harichandan in the state capital, Raipur, on Thursday. The delegation expressed deep concerns over recent communal incidents across the state.
It also extended an invitation to Governor Harichandan for the upcoming Iftar program during the holy month of Ramadan.
Comprising members from Durg-Bhilai, Rajnandgaon, Raipur, and other districts, the delegation conveyed to the Governor the longstanding tradition of peaceful coexistence among diverse religious and caste groups in the state. Despite the state’s tranquil ethos, recent events have instilled apprehension in the Muslim community, constituting approximately 3 percent of Chhattisgarh’s population, predominantly residing in urban centres, towns, and villages.
Detailing specific incidents, the delegation highlighted a disturbing event that occurred on January 23 near the Tilda Industrial City police station, where religious leader Maulana Asghar Ali was subjected to physical assault by unidentified miscreants in the presence of law enforcement officers. Instead of swiftly taking action against the perpetrators, the Tilda police purportedly incarcerated Maulana Ali, casting doubts on the impartiality of law enforcement authorities.
Moreover, the delegation detailed another incident involving the vandalisation of a madrasa and adjacent premises in village Bhotidih, District Dhamtari, allegedly orchestrated by individuals affiliated with organisations from Dhamtari, Kurud, and surrounding areas. Despite registering initial reports, the Magarlod Police’s purported inaction in apprehending the culprits exacerbated community anxieties.
Further exacerbating tensions, the delegation recounted the demolition of the boundary wall enclosing the Muslim cemetery in Kawardha, sanctioned and constructed by the Municipal Council. Despite official approval, the demolition was justified under the pretext of encroachment, sparking outrage and raising questions about procedural integrity.
Additionally, the delegation brought to light the suspicious circumstances surrounding the murder of Sadhram Yadav in Kawardha on December 23, with concerns raised over the handling of the investigation and subsequent arrests. Allegations of hasty legal proceedings and the imposition of stringent laws like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against the accused underscored the urgency for transparent and thorough investigations.
Responding to these distressing accounts, Governor Harichandan assured the delegation of his commitment to addressing the grievances and upholding the rule of law. Promising to initiate appropriate measures to address the concerns raised, the governor underscored the importance of fostering an environment conducive to peaceful coexistence and justice for all citizens.
The delegation’s meeting with Governor Harichandan is a poignant reminder of the enduring values of tolerance, justice, and communal harmony.
