Elderly Muslim Man Booked Over Alleged Remarks Against Yogi and Modi

Date:

MEERUT — A 70-year-old Muslim man from Meerut was arrested within a day after a video of him allegedly making “objectionable” comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath went viral on social media.

The man, identified as Ehsaan, was speaking to a local news channel after Eid al-Adha prayers on May 28 when he allegedly used offensive language while discussing political leaders. During the interview, he referred to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as a “gunda” and went on to make similar remarks about Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In the video, Ehsaan can be heard criticising the leaders and objecting to appeals for singing “Vande Mataram.” His comments quickly attracted attention online, prompting police action.

Police Register Case After Video Gains Traction

Meerut Police said they took cognisance of the viral clip and registered a case under relevant legal provisions. According to officials, the remarks were directed at individuals holding constitutional offices and were considered inappropriate.

In a statement shared on social media, the police said legal action had been initiated and the accused had been taken into custody for further proceedings.

Ehsaan was arrested on May 29, less than 24 hours after the video surfaced online.

Following his arrest, another video released by police showed Ehsaan being escorted by officers. In the footage, he appeared to be limping and was seen holding his ears, a gesture often associated with apologising or expressing regret.

The video circulated widely on social media, sparking debate over the police response and the handling of similar cases.

The arrest has also drawn attention because of another incident reported in Meerut on the same day. In that case, a local youth named Puneet informed police that a bag containing meat had been left outside his home.

However, CCTV footage later allegedly revealed that Puneet himself had placed the bag there before filing the complaint. Despite the false report, police reportedly issued a warning and advised him not to provide misleading information in the future.

The contrasting outcomes in the two cases have stirred discussion on social media, with users questioning police response to the two different incidents.
