NEW DELHI — The main Opposition Congress on Monday put Prime Minister Narender Modi and the BJP in the dock over outraging modesty of a young woman in Chandigarh and a real estate scam to the tune of Rs 500-800 crores in Maharashtra.

Alleging double standards being adopted by the PM and the BJP, the Congress asked why they are protecting Haryana BJP president and his children, and a minister in Maharashtra.

Talking to reporters here, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged that the Union home ministry is conspiring to hush up the entire matter in order to protect the Haryana state BJP president and his son, who is allegedly involved in outraging the modesty of a girl in Chandigarh. He said the home ministry, which directly controls UT administration and UT Police of Chandigarh, is trying to save the Haryana BJP leader’s son in a serious case of outraging the modesty of a woman.

Surjewala, who is a member of Haryana Assembly, said the police did not arrest the BJP leader’s son under non-bailable sections of the IPC.

Playing the two videos, he said earlier the investigating police officer Satish Kumar, DSP (East) at 2.30 pm stated clearly that it is a case of abduction – 365 and 511 – attempt to commit an offence.

“He further answers in a reply to a question raised by a journalist that both these offences are non-bailable – I again repeat non-bailable and punishable with imprisonment of 7-10 years. The same police officers, after 2-1/2 hours around5:00 pm, only imposed offences of stalking – 354-D,” Surjewala added.

He insisted that it is a case of abduction and attempt to commit an offence but the police under the “dictates of the BJP government” lodged a case under bailable offences as the ruling BJP is trying to cover up and hush up the entire matter.

Showing the video of the girl in question, who clearly stated before the magistrate in a statement under 164, and is saying so again on camera that there was a clear cut unequivocal attempt to abduct her, he said.

Recalling the similar incident involving son of a senior minister in the Congress-led Haryana government a few years ago, Surjewala said present Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was then the BJP president and other BJP leaders had demanded the resignation of the minister holding him accountable.

“Will Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah answer the nation as to why the BJP president and his children are being protected in this fashion?” the Congress leader asked.

The party also made a serious charge of corruption to the tune Rs 500 – 800 crore on the BJP-led Maharashtra government which allegedly flouted rules to favour a real estate builder. In a separate briefing another senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan flagged off the MP Mills SRA scam in Mumbai.

He said the BJP government which came to power on the promise of giving a corruption-free rule stands completely exposed. He highlighted a serious case of corruption amounting illegal benefit to the tune Rs 500 – 800 crore, of wilful violation of rules, collusion with chosen builders and officials which is rocking the Maharashtra Legislature.

“Prakash Mehta, Minister of Housing, Maharashtra, illegally approved the transfer of slum dwellers’ building rights to a major builder/developer in a Slum Redevelopment project in South Mumbai’s prestigious Tardeo area,” the former CM said.

He said the matter raises serious question of probity and corruption as it is the case of flagrant and wilful violation of rules, procedures and law. “Files in public domain confirm specific involvement and complicity of the minister,” he added.
