NEW DELHI – Four bike-borne assailants on Monday fatally shot the district president of All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in Bihar’s Gopalganj, Abdul Salam.
The AIMIM leader, riding pillion with a relative, was on his way to a railway station to catch a train when four people riding two motorcycles fired at him from close range, reports reaching here on Tuesday said.
“Some bike-borne miscreants shot a person. Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused. The deceased is an AIMIM leader. We are working on this case,” Pranjal Kumar, Sadar’s Subdivisional Police Officer, said.
After being shot, a profusely bleeding Salam was rushed to Sadar Hospital in Turkaha where he succumbed to his injuries.
Salam had previously contested unsuccessfully in the by-poll to the Gopalganj assembly seat.
Monday’s incident marks the second killing of an AIMIM leader in Bihar within a short span, following the December assassination of Arif Jamal, the party’s district president in Siwan.
The repeated instances of violence against AIMIM leaders in Bihar have sparked concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, urging thorough investigations into the incidents and demanding justice for the victims.
“…former candidate of @aimim_national cum State Secretary Abdul Salam Aslam Mukhiya has been shot dead. I pray to Allah to give patience to his family. Last year in December, our Siwan District President Arif Jamal was shot dead. @NitishKumar Save your chair. If you get time from the sports competition, do some work also? Why are only our leaders the target? Will their families get justice?,” Owaisi said in a tweet.
