NEW DELHI — The DNA sample of Samajwadi Party leader Moeed Khan did not match the foetus of the victim allegedly raped by an employee of Khan in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya.
The finding, which came out in a report submitted by the Uttar Pradesh government in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court, has strengthened the claims of Khan’s family members of his innocence. His family and the Samajwadi Party have been demanding the DNA test asserting that Khan was implicated in the case due to political reasons.
After Khan was implicated in the rape case, authorities demolished his bakery and a shopping complex calling them “illegal”.
Although Khan’s DNA samples did to match the victim’s foetus, the test turned out to be positive for his employee Raju.
The court was hearing a bail application filed by Khan, who had approached it after being denied bail by a lower court in Ayodhya.
The court had ordered the director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to submit the DNA sampling report of the foetus of the minor girl, who was allegedly gang raped in Ayodhya, with the DNA samples of Khan and Raju.
After the DNA test, family members of Khan reiterated the innocence of the 73-year-old Samajwadi leader while pointing to political vendetta at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state.
“We have been saying since the beginning that my brother is innocent. The DNA report has only confirmed what we have been saying all along. He was framed for political reasons. The BJP lost the Bhadarsa Nagar panchayat poll and the Ayodhya Lok Sabha election which is why he was framed. My brother’s image is good and he is popular among the public and gets all the work done. We hope that the high court will give him bail. He has been in jail for two months now,” media reports quoted Aftab Khan, a cousin of Khan, as saying.
Meanwhile, people on social media slammed the BJP and the media for targeting Khan without concrete evidence against him.
SP Spokesperson Manoj Yadav targeted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for defaming the Samajwadi Party through the rape case.
“Now @myogiadityanath will have to answer why he defames the Samajwadi Party,” said Manoj Yadav.
Journalist Anil Yadav said that Khan was targeted because of his Muslim identity and his SP links.
“What a dirty campaign was run by BJP leaders and Manuvadi media against Moeed Khan just because he was a Muslim and a SP leader. Even at that time these people knew that they were doing wrong with Moeed Khan, but for political gains, these people do not shy away from anything,” he said.
