NEW DELHI — The anticipated alliance between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress remains in limbo due to disagreements over key seats, particularly the Lok Sabha seats of Bharuch in Gujarat and Chandigarh. The issue of seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi is also a bone of contention between both the parties.
Formidable leader and Congress stalwart late Ahmed Patel had represented Bharuch. Now his relatives are staking a claim to this significant seat. The party faces a challenge in overlooking Patel’s family’s aspirations. AAP is also eying this important seat, but the Congress is reluctant to surrender the stronghold of its influential leader.
Similarly, a disagreement persists regarding the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, with AAP expressing a desire to contest while Congress remains opposed to the idea. AAP is also insisting on retaining its election symbol even if the candidate aligns with the Congress.
Sources said the draft of the alliance is near completion, finalising it has been delayed, with both parties unable to reach a consensus.
Congress sources revealed that both parties are leaning towards contesting the Delhi elections under a 4-3 formula, with AAP receiving a significant share. However, disputes over Bharuch and Chandigarh are impeding the finalisation of the alliance.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, President of Delhi Congress, emphasised that decisions regarding the alliance are made at the top leadership level, involving Congress and other parties, including AAP. Discussions are ongoing, with resolutions reached in some areas and disagreements persisting in others. In preparation for the Lok Sabha elections, the Delhi Congress has initiated groundwork for all seven Lok Sabha seats in the capital.
The resolution of these disputes is key to clear the clouds hovering over the political landscape. The timeframe for reaching a consensus remains uncertain as high-level discussions and meetings continue between the two parties.
