NEW DELHI: Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) of the Narendra Modi government, Arvind Subramanian has resigned for “personal reasons” just months before the Lok Sabha elections, considered crucial for the political career of Modi. His resignation has given an opportunity to the Congress to sharpen attack on the BJP-led NDA government at the centre.

“लगता है देश की अर्थव्यवस्था को बर्बाद करके मोदी सरकार के दिग्गज एक – एक कर झोला उठा के निकलना शुरू कर चुके हैं! (It seems that after destroying the economy of the country, the bigwigs of the Modi government are packing and leaving one by one)”, commented the Congress party.

After Raghuram Rajan and Arvind Panagariya, Arvind Subramanian is the third top economist to quit Modi government in the last four years. Rajan was Governor of Reserve Bank of India while Panagariya was Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog.

Subramanian’s term would not be extended any further as he wants to go back to the US due to family commitments, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Subramanian had joined as the CEA on October 16, 2014 for a period of three years.

“Few days ago Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian met me over video conferencing. He informed me that he would like to go back to the United States on account of pressing family commitments,” Jaitley said, adding that his reasons were “personal but extremely important” to him.

“He left me with no option but to agree with him.”

On the expiry of the three year term also Jaitley had requested the CEA to continue for some more time, he said, adding: “Even at that stage he told me that he was torn between family commitment and his current job which he considered the best and most fulfilling he has ever done.”

Congress president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to comment on “locked” Jaitley “breaking news” on Facebook. He also took a jibe by describing Jaitley as ex-FM with a question mark.

“Ex? FM is locked in his room, breaking news on FaceBook. BJP Treasurer has the keys to the Indian Economy. The brightest flee the sinking ship, as the “invisible hand” of the RSS steers it onto the rocks. Meanwhile, Captain DeMo is fast asleep. It’s crazy out there !” tweeted Gandhi.
