A Palestinian’s Message to the World

Date:

Omar al-Abed

Guilt lies squarely where it belongs – on decades of occupation harshness, Palestinians brutalized for not being Jews, no other reasons.

Hours before he killed three West Bank settlers, Omar al-Abed posted a Facebook message explaining why.

“These are my last words,” he said. “I am young, not yet 20. I had many dreams and aspirations, but what kind of life is this, with our women and youths murdered without justification?”

Abed’s neighbor Nael Barghouti was arrested and reincarcerated after serving 33 years in prison. Another neighbor, Marwan Barghouti, was given multiple life sentences based on lies.

He’s Palestine’s most popular leader. Israel imprisoned him to prevent his election as president, a figure they can’t control – unlike installed puppet Abbas.

Abed killed three settlers because “they desecrate the Al-Aqsa mosque and we sleep,” he said. “It’s a disgrace that we sit by idly.”

“You who have weapons that are rusting, that you take out only for weddings and celebrations, are you not ashamed of yourselves? Why won’t you declare war in the name of God? They have closed Al-Aqsa and your weapons are still.”

Abed represents deep-seated Palestinian despair, their land occupied, their rights ignored, their lives and welfare threatened, their futures bleak.

Early in life, he lost hope, his dreams and aspirations shattered. Despair and daily misery drove him to act.

Guilt lies squarely where it belongs – on decades of occupation harshness, Palestinians brutalized for not being Jews, no other reasons.

Separately, Netanyahu urged European leaders to stop supporting Palestinians, tepid as it is, largely rhetorical. He called for accepting Israel as a regional hegemon, an occupying power in perpetuity.

I’d love to believe the days of imperial America and Israel are numbered – along with NATO, the main threat to world peace, stability and security.

Maybe someday it’s coming – if humanity can avoid a nuclear holocaust in the interim, a more likely possibility than world peace.
