NEW DELHI – The tragic killing of six innocent Muslims by Uttar Pradesh Police in Sambhal is deeply distressing, All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, a prominent federation of Muslim organisations in the country, has said. The Muslims protesting the survey of the city’s historic Jama Masjid were shot in cold blood, it said demanding the dismissal of the Yogi Adityanath government in the state.

The blatant act of state terrorism under the guise of the mosque’s survey is unacceptable in any civilised society, the Mushawarat said. The criminals responsible for this incident should not be pardoned under any circumstances, it said.

Strongly reacting to the violence in Sambhal, Mushawarat chief Advocate Feroze Ahmed demanded that the victims’ families be compensated with one crore rupees each, and a high-level judicial inquiry be conducted into the incident to bring the responsible parties to justice.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Mushawarat chief called on President Droupadi Murmu to immediately dismiss the Yogi government, asserting that under this government, justice cannot be expected for the oppressed. The criminal record of the chief minister is well known, and it has only worsened since he came to power, he said.

The Mushawarat expressed its anger, stating that while the entire government machinery, police, and PAC in Uttar Pradesh have shown a pattern of hatred and prejudice against Muslims, what transpired in Bahraich and now in Sambhal is clearly organised crime.

It added that the atmosphere regarding mosques in various parts of the state has been deliberately worsened, creating new controversies to spread hatred and animosity. By focusing on the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, the situation is being aggravated, and Muslims who raise their voices against injustice are being oppressed.

The Mushawarat believes that the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is openly attempting to polarise voters by targeting Muslims as a distinct group. It criticised the government’s approach of conducting a second survey of the mosque immediately after the first and submit the report on the same day, calling it part of a well-orchestrated conspiracy. While the anger and protests of the Muslims were entirely natural, the police and district administration responded with one-sided actions, brutally shooting the youth, which is an inhumane and unjustifiable act. Such actions deserve the utmost condemnation, the Mushawarat chief said.
