Some residents allege that fruit sellers sometimes use artificial substances to enhance the appearance and taste of the produce

MUMBAI — In a tragic and shocking incident, four members of a Muslim family were on Monday found dead under mysterious circumstances, with initial suspicion pointing towards possible food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns over food safety and hygiene. According to preliminary information, the family—comprising two adults and two children—reportedly consumed watermelon at their residence in the Pydhonie area of South Mumbai on Sunday night, shortly before falling severely ill. Neighbours alerted authorities after noticing no movement from the house for an extended period.

According to reports, the family had hosted guests for dinner at their home. After the guests left, the family ate watermelon around 1.30 am. By around 3 am, they began feeling unwell, and their condition deteriorated rapidly.

The deceased have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their two daughters, Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13).

Initial reports suggest that soon after consuming the fruit, the family experienced severe symptoms, including vomiting, dizziness, and acute discomfort. Their condition worsened soon, causing panic among relatives and neighbours.

Locals rushed them to a hospital after treatment by a family doctor failed to improve their condition.

The sudden deaths have raised serious concerns and prompted an immediate investigation.

Police have registered a case and launched a detailed probe to determine the exact cause of their deaths.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and samples of the consumed food items, including the watermelon, are expected to be tested as part of the forensic analysis. Authorities said a clear picture will emerge only after medical and laboratory reports are available.

The incident has sparked concerns over the quality and safety of food, including seasonal fruits available in the market. Some residents alleged that fruit sellers sometimes use artificial substances to enhance the appearance and taste of produce.

The residents are reported struggling to come to terms with the loss of an entire family in their neighbourhood.

Authorities are expected to intensify checks and take action against vendors found violating food safety norms.
