PATNA: With a fresh set of medical reports confirming that 34 out of 42 minor girls were raped at the state-run shelter home in Muzaffarpur, 70 kms from the state capital, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav has intensified attack on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his JDU-BJP coalition government.

“If all the allegations around Orphanages, Shelter/Remand Homes of the State are thoroughly and honestly investigated, half the JDU & BJP leaders will be politically finished or behind the bars! Every Bihari knows this truth!,” tweeted Tejashwi.

As many as 34 minor girls housed in the shelter home have been raped as against earlier figure of 29, police said on Saturday.

The medical examination of 42 girls had earlier found that at least 29 of them were raped, at least three were made to undergo abortion, and another three are pregnant. All the victims are children; most of them between seven and 14 years old.

In their recorded statements before the special POCSO court, the girls said that they were tortured, starved, injected with drugs, and raped almost every night.

Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harpreet Kaur said: “It was not 29 but 34 girls who were raped at the Muzaffarpur shelter home.”

Medical examinations of 42 girls last week revealed that 29 of them were raped.

Under pressure from the opposition, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had on Thursday recommended a CBI probe.

Unleashing the attack on Nitish, Tejashwi said: “The rape scandal of Muzaffarpur girls shelter home is not the lone incident. Such reports are now coming from similar shelter homes in Banka, Saran, Darbhanga, Gopalganj, Hajipur. The government is not concerned about justice but to save the criminals. The silence of Nitish ji is criminal.”

Around half a dozen people, including Brajesh Kumar Thakur, owner of the building from where the shelter home was running, have been arrested.

There is also an allegation that a girl was killed and buried in the campus of the shelter home. In search of the body, the police excavated the premises earlier this week.

Meanwhile, wife of an accused government official has claimed that husband of a minister in the Nitish cabinet would frequent the shelter home.
