Ishita Kishore topped the list of 933 successful candidates while Waseem Ahmed Bhat secured the highest rank among Muslim candidates

NEW DELHI — Thirty Muslim candidates have cracked the 2022 examination of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), it was announced on Tuesday.
Ishita Kishore topped the list of 933 successful candidates while Waseem Ahmed Bhat secured the highest rank among Muslim candidates.
Bhat, who got 7th All India Rank (AIR), hails from Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Bhat said his hard work and dedication towards the UPSC have turned out extremely fruitful. “I am very happy with my performance,” he told news agency KNO over the phone from New Delhi. The 24-year-old also said that this feat is dedicated to all those who supported him unconditionally.
Bhat has done B. Tech in civil engineering from the National Institute of Technology Srinagar. In 2021, Bhat secured 225th overall rank in the UPSC Civil Services exam.
Out of 30 successful Muslim candidates, there are eight women. There is only one Muslim candidate in the top ten list while there are three Muslims among the top 100 candidates.

The government said the final list was based on the result of the written part of the Civil Services Examination, 2022 held by the UPSC in September 2022 and the interviews for the personality test held in January-May, 2023.
Out of the 933 successful candidates, 345 are from the general category, 99 are from economically weaker sections (EWS), 263 are from Other Backward Classes, 154 are from Scheduled Castes (SC) and 99 are from Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Ishita Kishore topped the exam followed by Garima Lohia who secured second rank, Uma Harathi (third), and Smriti Mishra (fourth). Interestingly, all top four positions were secured by women this year.
Last year, 685 candidates qualified for the coveted civil services. Of them, 25 were Muslims. Since the total intake for 2021 was only 685, as against 933 for 2022, the Muslims’ position remains the same in percentage terms.
