Veteran Journalist K K Muhammad is No More

Date:

CALICUT — Veteran journalist and former resident editor of Chandrika, a Malayalam daily published by the Indian Union Muslim League Kerala State committee, died at Peringathur in Kannur district today. His body will be buried at the burial ground of the Jamaath mosque in the village after prayers this afternoon, according to family sources.

K K Muhammad was a well known political activist and journalist from the seventies, when he played a critical role during the internal schisms and split in the Kerala Muslim League. He was instrumental in controlling the editorial policy of the party’s official newspaper those days and was aligned with the dissidents in the party. A story goes that one editorial written by C H Muhammad Koya, then editor of the daily and senior party leader, was removed from the page by dissidents at the time.

Later he was associated with the new political party affiliated to the CPM- Left Front, known as the All India Muslim League where he was a prominent leader. After a decade, both parties merged and KK, as he was affectionately called by friends and colleagues, returned to the party newspaper.

He was also editor of League Times, the dissident group’s newspaper, and president of the Calicut Press Club. He had also contested to the State Assembly from the Calicut south constituency but could not win.

However, for the past many years he was not very active in public life.
