KOLKATA – Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan has made a remarkable debut in the political arena, winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Bahrampur constituency in West Bengal. Running as a candidate for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Pathan secured more than four lakh votes, defeating Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary by a margin of approximately 60,000 votes.

Pathan’s victory marks a significant milestone in his career, transitioning from a celebrated sportsman to a prominent political figure. “I am deeply honoured by the trust and support shown by the people of Bahrampur,” Pathan said in his victory speech. “I am committed to working for the development and welfare of my constituents.”

This election result highlights a shift in the political dynamics of Bahrampur, where Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary has been a dominant factor. Chaudhary, a seasoned politician with years of experience, acknowledged the results, stating: “While the outcome is not what we hoped for, I respect the democratic process and congratulate Yusuf Pathan on his victory.”

The former cricketer’s campaign focused on key issues such as local development, employment opportunities, and improved infrastructure, resonating with a broad spectrum of voters. His celebrity status and commitment to social causes added to his appeal, making him a formidable candidate.

Political analyst Sumantra Bose commented on the significance of Pathan’s win: “Yusuf Pathan’s success is a clear indication of the changing political landscape in West Bengal. It reflects the electorate’s desire for new leadership and fresh perspectives in governance.”

Pathan’s entry into politics comes as part of a broader trend of sports personalities transitioning into public service, bringing their fame and influence to the political stage. His win is expected to energise the Trinamool Congress and could potentially inspire other athletes to pursue political careers.

As the new Lok Sabha member, Yusuf Pathan faces the challenge of translating his popularity into tangible benefits for his constituents. His agenda includes enhancing educational facilities, boosting local industries, and ensuring better healthcare services.
