NEW DELHI – Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is facing significant public and political criticism for distributing Rs 300 as scholarship cheques to students of Sanskrit schools, colleges and universities in the state.

According to reports, Adityanath handed out scholarship cheques to students during Sunday’s launch of the Sanskrit Scholarship Scheme in Varanasi. The scholarship scheme was launched at the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.

After a video of Yogi Adityanath handing over cheques of Rs 300 to students appeared on social media platforms, netizens and political parties criticised the state government as they perceived it as inadequate and more of a publicity stunt than genuine support for education.

Critics argue that the Rs 300 amount fails to reflect the rising educational costs and inflation. Furthermore, some claim that the move is symbolic and does not contribute significantly to the educational progression of the students it aims to support.

Prominent political leaders have voiced their disapproval. Leaders from opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and Congress, have demanded an increase in the scholarship amount, emphasising the need for substantial support in the context of inflation and educational expenses.

The official Instagram account of the Congress party shared a video of the event, sarcastically questioning, “What will the children do with such a big amount?”.

“Chief Minister is distributing 300 rupees scholarships to children by playing full drama. What will the children do with such a big amount? You tell me, if you had received 300 rupees as a scholarship, what heights would your career be today?” Congress’ Instagram caption read.

Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed also reacted to the viral video, and said, “Only BJP can do this! Cheques of ₹300 were distributed as scholarships to students by UP CM Yogi Adityanath. It seems they spent more on printing the cheques than their actual value.”

Netizens reacted to the video showing Yogi Adityanath distributing cheques, alleging that the “public money is being wasted on publicity”.

“Yogi Adityanath is giving a huge cheque of ₹300 to the students. The cost of printing the cheques would have been more than this. Public money is being wasted on publicity. What a downfall by BJ party,” a user said.

“UP CM Yogi Adityanath distributes ₹300 scholarship cheques to students. Only BJP can do such campaign work”, wrote another user.
