Delhi: Tension Rises in Uttam Nagar After 1,700 Tridents Distributed at a VHP Event

Date:

The programme, held near an earlier violence site, draws criticism from locals and activists; questions raised over the police response

NEW DELHI — Fresh tension has been reported in the volatile Uttam Nagar area of the national capital after tridents were distributed among youths during a programme earlier this week. The trident event, organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), happened on April 12, days after the area had begun returning to normal following the killing of a young man during a Holi dispute.

The earlier incident took place on 4 March, when a clash between two families from different communities led to the death of Tarun Khatik. Police had said that the accused persons were arrested soon after, and the situation had slowly started to calm down.

However, a recent gathering organised in Hastsal’s Ayyappa Park has again raised concern among locals. According to reports, around 1,700 tridents were distributed during the event, which organisers described as a “Trishul Deeksha” programme.

Organisers said the event was meant to spread a message of “service, values and safety.” A member associated with the programme stated, “This is a cultural and religious activity. It is not aimed at any community.”

But several residents and observers have expressed worry about the timing and nature of the event, especially as it was held close to the area where the earlier violence took place.

A resident said, “The area had just started becoming normal. Such programmes create fear again, especially among minority families.”

There have also been allegations that some speeches made during the event were objectionable and could increase tension. Independent reports have claimed that strong language was used from the stage, though no official confirmation has been issued by the police so far.

A community member said, “We heard speeches that made people uncomfortable. We want peace, not more fear.”

Police and paramilitary forces were present in large numbers during the programme. Barricades were placed, and traffic movement was controlled in the area. Officials have not yet released a detailed public statement regarding the event.

Another resident questioned the response, saying, “If the situation is sensitive, then such gatherings should be handled more carefully. People are still recovering from what happened.”

Earlier, after the March incident, houses linked to the accused had faced attacks, and demolition action by civic authorities had also drawn attention and criticism. Some families had to leave the area, adding to concerns about safety and fairness.

Despite these developments, many people from both communities in Uttam Nagar have called for calm and restraint.

A shopkeeper in the area said, “We have lived together for years. We don’t want any trouble. Everyone should act responsibly.”

Reports also suggest that similar programmes may be planned in other parts of the city in the coming weeks, which has further increased concern among some sections of society.

For now, Uttam Nagar remains under close watch, with security forces deployed and authorities expected to review the situation as it develops.
