ASI urged to take action while Muslims express concerns over misrepresentation and social media hysteria
AGRA – A video showing a man offering namaz in a park depicting the Taj Mahal complex has gone viral on social media. The footage has sparked anger among Hindu organisations who have demanded immediate action from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The short clip, reportedly recorded on a mobile phone last Friday, shows a young man wearing a cap and kurta pajama performing namaz. “It is completely unacceptable to perform any religious activity inside the Taj Mahal premises,” said a representative of a Hindu organisation. “ASI must take strict action against such acts to preserve the sanctity of our national heritage.”
The ASI has long maintained strict instructions prohibiting religious ceremonies and prayers inside the Taj Mahal complex. However, videos like this have caused confusion and outrage online. “We urge people to verify facts before jumping to conclusions,” said a local Agra resident. “Not everything shared on social media is accurate, and such videos can create unnecessary tension.”
Hindu organisations have also previously taken steps to assert their claims, highlighting attempts to offer Ganga water or perform aarti at the Taj Mahal. Last year, three individuals were reportedly arrested for offering namaz at the monument. “The Taj Mahal, often referred to as Tejo Mahal, is a symbol of our heritage. Attempts to perform religious activities here cannot be tolerated,” said another spokesperson.
Meanwhile, media channels have not officially confirmed the location or authenticity of the viral video. Legal experts and community members have called for restraint, emphasising that social media videos often spread misinformation. “While everyone has the right to worship, it is important that rules and regulations of heritage sites are respected,” said an Agra-based lawyer.
As the video continues to circulate online, authorities have yet to issue a formal statement verifying whether the act took place inside the Taj Mahal premises. Local residents and social media users are divided, with some condemning the alleged act and others calling for verification before any punitive action.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions around religious activities at heritage sites, where the preservation of monuments intersects with public sensitivities and communal perceptions. Officials are expected to review security footage and records to ascertain the truth behind the viral video, while both Hindu organisations and Muslim community members watch closely.
