“The BJP-ruled states are making films like ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free while here a BJP leader’s daughter is marrying a Muslim man. These are double standards of the BJP and party workers will get demoralised,” said a Facebook user
NEW DELHI — The daughter of a BJP leader in Uttarakhand’s Pauri region is all set to tie the knot with a Muslim youth later this month. As distribution of the wedding cards began, the BJP leader has been subjected to a brutal troll on social media with several users sarcastically questioning the integrity of Yashpal Benam, a former MLA of the Saffron party, media reports said.
While Hindutva hardliners are trolling Benam and the Saffron party alleging “double standards”, others are calling the nuptial knot an attempt of “Love Jihad”, comparing it with the recently released Islamophobic movie “The Kerala Story”.
“The BJP-ruled states are making films like ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free while here a BJP leader’s daughter is marrying a Muslim man. These are double standards of the BJP and party workers will get demoralised,” said a Facebook user.
“Love Jihad” is a term often used by BJP leaders as well as Hindutva fanatics to allege a ploy by young Muslims to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.
Pauri Temple Committee officials described the issue as “a matter of serious concern.”
Media reports quoted a committee member as saying that “getting daughters of Hindu families marrying to men from other religions is a part of propaganda. In India, the laws on conversion are being altered, and the tombs built for and by people of other communities on government properties are being demolished by the Centre. Still, BJP’s own leaders are getting their daughters married to a Muslim man.”
He further said that people from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal should oppose this.
“BJP is a party for the protection of Hindus. It should immediately expel such people from the party,” he added.
Requesting anonymity, people close to Yashpal Benam said that his daughter studied at Lucknow University and was in a relationship with the man whom she is going to marry.
The wedding is scheduled at a resort in Pauri on May 28.
Benam is the chairman of the Pauri Municipal Corporation. He was earlier with the Congress and won as an independent from the Pauri Assembly constituency in 2007.
Political leaders from both the BJP and the Congress have been invited to the wedding, reports said.
