NEW DELHI – Tension prevailed in Bhadohi district in Uttar Pradesh after some unidentified miscreants vandalized the statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar in the Orai area on Tuesday.

The vandalisation of the statue in Gram Sabha Dwarikapur of the area follows an attempt by a local activist in the village, Mishri Lal Gautam, to install it at a disputed site four days ago, media reports reaching here said on Wednesday. Gautam’s attempt was thwarted by the intervention of the local police after they were alerted by some locals.

The police intervention did not deter Gautam who managed to install the statue at the disputed site in the early hours of Monday. The situation escalated on Tuesday morning when miscreants targeted and vandalised the statue, adding to the prevailing tension in the area.
