NEW DELHI – Several members of Hindutva organisations participating in a Ram Navami rally stormed and desecrated the Syed Salar Ghazi Dargah in the Uttar Pradesh city of Prayagraj on Sunday.
Ram Navami is one of the auspicious Hindu festivals celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm. It commemorates the birth anniversary of the Hindu deity Ram, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. But, for several years now the Hindutva brigade has been using the religious occasion to attack mosques and hoist the saffron flags on their tops with the playing of loud and vulgar music. They also chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans in a way to tease and provoke the Muslim community.
The Ram Navami rallyists seemed to be emboldened by little or no action by the authorities on their misdeeds on several earlier occasions elsewhere in the country, especially in states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sunday’s visuals on social media show the right-wing participants climbing the dargah and waving saffron flags, all the while raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan amid loud music in the background, media reports said on Monday.
The Hindutva mob also reportedly demanded the removal of the tomb and the construction of a temple.
Earlier, in another incident on March 26, a Hindutva mob stormed the Hazrat Ahmed Chishti and replaced its green flag with a saffron one.
The incident was captured on a video that has since gone viral on different social media platforms.
The video shows some men forcibly entering the dargah and hoisting the saffron flag as the mob egged them on by chanting Hindutva slogans and applauding their act.
