Police say dispute over water splash led to violent altercation involving sticks and bats, leaving injuries and arrests; court sends the accused to judicial custody till May 2

MUMBAI — A street dispute in the Bhaykhala area of Mumbai has led to the arrest of three individuals, including relatives of former cricketer and politician Yusuf Pathan, after a violent altercation allegedly broke out over a minor traffic-related incident.

According to police, the incident took place on Saturday evening when a local, Yusuf Khan, was returning home. His vehicle reportedly passed through a water-filled pothole, causing water to splash onto another person standing nearby.

The person, identified as Shoaib Khan, allegedly became angry over the incident, leading to an argument between the two sides.

Yusuf Khan stated that he immediately stopped his vehicle and apologised. “I said sorry even though it was not intentional, but the other person started abusing and attacked my car,” he claimed.

He further alleged that sticks were used to damage his vehicle, breaking its windows during the confrontation.

Police said that the situation initially appeared to be a road dispute, but later escalated into physical violence.

The matter took a serious turn when both groups allegedly clashed again while Yusuf Khan and his family were on their way to the police station.

During this second incident, individuals identified as Khalid Khan alias Makalik (Yusuf Pathan’s father-in-law), his son Umrshad Khan, Shoaib Khan, and another accused Shahbaz Pathan, were allegedly involved.

Police stated that sticks and a baseball bat were used during the attack. One person reportedly suffered a fracture in his hand, while another sustained serious injuries.

A police officer said, “Based on CCTV footage and witness statements, the involvement of the accused has been clearly established.”

Three accused have been arrested, while Shahbaz Pathan remains absconding. All arrested individuals have been sent to judicial custody until May 2.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and recovered weapons, including sticks and a bat to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Meanwhile, the defence has claimed that the incident was a mutual fight arising from a minor road dispute. They have also alleged biased police action and stated that a counter FIR has been filed.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will depend on evidence collected during the inquiry.
