Case filed against 700 protesters as tensions rise in Badhana town following social media controversy

MUZAFFARNAGAR — Thousands of Muslims took to the streets in Muzaffarnagar’s Badhana town on Saturday night, protesting against a derogatory social media post targeting Islam, allegedly made by a local resident, Nikhil alias Vicky Tyagi. The demonstrators blocked the Barut highway, demanding immediate action from authorities.
Police acted swiftly and arrested Vicky Tyagi.
A case has now been registered against 700 protesters involved in the demonstration, which saw escalating tensions in the town.
According to eyewitnesses, rumours circulated late in the evening that Tyagi had been released from police custody, further fuelling unrest. Hundreds of protestors, reacting to the rumour, resumed their protest, once again blocking the highway and, reportedly, pelting stones at Tyagi’s shop.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The situation was already tense, and the rumour that Vicky Tyagi was set free only made things worse. People were frustrated and felt that justice would not be served.”
The police, however, reassured the community that the accused remained in custody, eventually convincing most of the protesters to disperse. Yet, a smaller group persisted, keeping vigil throughout the night. Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain order and prevent any further escalation.
A senior police official stated, “We are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all citizens. The arrest has been made, and we are taking steps to address both the protest and the underlying concerns.”
Jamiat Ulema Hind, a prominent Muslim organisation, has filed a formal complaint against Vicky Tyagi, urging the authorities to take strict action to avoid further communal tension.
One protester, Mohammad Irfan, expressed the sentiments of many, saying, “All we ask is respect for our religion. Such comments hurt the sentiments of an entire community, and we cannot remain silent.”
As the town remains under tight police surveillance, authorities are urging calm and requesting that residents avoid spreading misinformation, which could exacerbate the situation. The district administration is also engaging with community leaders to prevent further unrest.
The situation in Badhana remains delicate, with officials on high alert to prevent any further violence or disruption.
