Residents of Ward 5 of Meerapur protest and call for strong and urgent police action
MUZAFFARNAGAR – Tension gripped Ward Number 5 of Meerapur town in Muzaffarnagar district after objectionable words were found scribbled on an Islamic calendar outside the house of a resident, Mohammad Ali. The incident, which appears to be a deliberate attempt to stoke communal discord, triggered outrage among residents who gathered in large numbers to protest against the act.
Local Councillor Dilshad condemned the incident and said, “The sentiments of the entire Muslim community have been deeply hurt. Such acts are clearly aimed at disturbing peace and harmony. The culprits must be caught and punished as per law.”
As news of the protest spread, Chairman Jameel Ahmed rushed to the site and appealed to residents to remain calm while assuring them of support. “I request everyone to maintain peace. We must allow the administration time to act, but we will not remain silent if justice is delayed,” he said.
Police station in-charge Bablu Singh Verma confirmed that a formal complaint has been lodged and an investigation is underway. “We have started identifying the miscreants using CCTV footage and other available evidence. The accused will be arrested soon,” he stated.
However, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the area. Locals recalled a similar event during the recent Hindu festival of Holi, when provocative material was found in the locality. Despite a complaint being filed, no action was taken by the police, which, they say, has emboldened anti-social elements.
“If the police had taken firm steps earlier, today’s incident could have been prevented,” said Rashid, a respected community member. He added that the repeated negligence by law enforcement is creating a dangerous environment.
Community leaders, including Chairman Jameel Ahmed, Councillor Dilshad, and several other prominent residents, visited the local police station to demand urgent action. They submitted a written memorandum urging immediate arrest of the culprits and cautioning authorities against further delay.
“If no serious steps are taken now, such incidents may spiral out of control and pose a grave threat to communal harmony,” warned Jameel Ahmed.
While the police have assured that the culprits will be booked shortly, residents remain cautious and watchful. The incident has once again exposed the fragile peace in the Uttar Pradesh town, where communal elements continue to thrive under political apathy and administrative inaction.
