NEW DELHI — A video has gone viral on the internet showing two cops mercilessly thrashing a man purportedly for not wearing a face mask properly thus allegedly violating the protocol enforced to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The incident, according to reports, took place in Firoz Gandhi Nagar under Pardesipura police station in Indore city of Madhya Pradesh.

The cops are employing the knee-on-the-neck technique while they manhandle the victim. His son is seen pleading before the cops to leave him while a crowd gathers and witnesses the scenes.

Reports said that the victim, 35, is an auto driver who was rushing to the hospital where his father was admitted. His son said the police saw that his mask had slipped down and beat him merciless without giving ear to his pleas. But the driver refused to do that which enraged the two cops who then started beating him in full public glare.

The video has sent shockwaves among the people who demanded action against the cops for resorting to cruel methods to enforce the Covid-19 protocol.

People also pointed out the duplicity of the government in dealing with coronavirus saying that ministers are seen flouting the rules by avoiding masks and organising election rallies while police are resorting to harsher ways to enforce the restrictions.

India Today cited Superintendent of Police (East) Ashutosh Bagri saying that the two constables seen in the video have been put under suspension as also an investigation launched into the matter.

The police have, however, said that the man first assaulted and abused the cops, the PTI reported. They added that the man is facing previous cases of cheating and extortion.
