NEW DELHI – An internal government investigation into the violence on Jamia Millia Islamia campus and its environs in South East Delhi and the crackdown by Delhi Police on students protesting against the controversial CAA and NRC on December 15, has revealed that cops fired bullets to quell the protests. Delhi police had earlier denied the charge that police used bullets on student protesters.

According to a report carried by Indian Express, the South East District Police in New Delhi have prepared a diary of the findings from the investigation. It stated that two police personnel fired three bullets on protesters in the presence of an officer of the rank of ACP.

On December 15, massive student protests erupted on the campus against CAA and NRC, and students were out on the roads when police swung into action and used strong force on the protesters, including firing of tear gas shells, stun grenades and resort to lathi charge.

The police barged into the library of the university and thrashed the boys and girls reading the books in the library. The action drew massive condemnation and triggered protests on campuses across the country. Hours after the police action, two students Aijaz Ahmad and Mhammad Shoiab who suffered bullet injuries were admitted to the Safdar Jung Hospital and a third student with bullet injury at the Holy family Hospital outside the campus.

The statements of the injured were recorded in the medico legal files of the hospitals. Earlier, DSP South, Chinmay Biswal, had rejected the medical reports and insisted that the police did not fire any bullet on the protesting students. He had raised questions over why the injured students were removed to the Safdar Jang Hospital instead of the nearby Holy family or Fortis Hospital.

When the higher authorities asked the cops whether any of them fired bullets, they said no, but a viral video of December 18 showed two policemen firing bullets while a third one of higher rank was standing by.

The South West district police has identified the two cops and the ACP who fired the bullets. It has been reported that the police fired in self-defence after the protests turned violent.

Two FIRs were registered in the aftermath of the violence during the protests, but these do not mention any use of bullets by the police. The diary will be submitted before the Special Investigation Team that was formed to probe the police violence and protests of December 15 in Jamia Millia Islamia.
