NEW DELHI — Intensifying the party’s broader push to rename areas linked to Muslim rulers, two BJP parliamentarians Dinesh Sharma (from UP) and Krishna Pal Gurjar (from Haryana) updated the address of their official residence in Lutyens’ Delhi, it triggered a verbal duel between the Congress and BJP.
They renamed Tughlaq Lane in the national capital to “Swami Vivekananda Marg” and changed the address at the name plates ourside their residences in New Delhi on Thursday.
The move came as Sharma, the Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister, performed ‘Griha Pravesh’ (housewarming) at his newly allotted residence on Tughlaq Lane. The MP prominently displayed the new name on his nameplate, with “Tughlaq Lane” mentioned in brackets below.
“Today, at the new residence located in New Delhi on Swami Vivekananda Marg (Tughlak Lane), I performed the housewarming ceremony with my family, following all the rituals and offering prayers,” he posted on X, along with the pictures.
Congress called it another attempt to instigate a “communal divide” while BJP rubbished the charge, saying the new city government’s focus on holistic development of the national capital.
Imran Masood, the Congress MP from Saharanpur took potshots at the Centre over the “renaming” of the Tuglaq lane in Lutyens’ Delhi and accused it of facilitating hatred and polarised discourse in the country.
“There is a bloodbath at the stock markets, investors have been robbed of their wealth in millions, youth are running from pillar to post but the government is not bothered. The government only wants hostility and antagonism to grow between Hindus and Muslims,” he said in a sharp jab at the Centre. — With agency inputs
