Trinamool Fields Sultan Ahmed’s Wife on Uluberia Lok Sabha Seat

KOLKATA  — The Trinamool Congress of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced the candidature of Sajda Ahmed, wife of former union minister Sultan Ahmed, from the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency. The polling for the seat will be held on January 29.

Trinamool’s senior leader and Lok Sabha Member Sultan Ahmed died in September at the age of 64 of cardiac arrest, necessitating the by-poll for the seat.

“Sajda Ahmed to be party’s candidate for Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency,” announced Trinamool on Friday.

Sultan Ahmed was Union Minister of State for Tourism in the Manmohan Singh government of Congress-led UPA. He was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Uluberia as candidate of of Trinamool Congress.

Academician by training and profession, his wife Sajda Ahmed, 55, has never been involved in electoral politics, and so this will be her maiden fight for legislature. She has been participating in social and community activities along with her husband. She was convener of Nursing School of Islamia Hospital. She has also served as principal of a private school.
