Tribal Mother of Two Bleeds to Death After Rape, Torture in MP’s Khandwa

The attackers allegedly inserted an iron rod into her private parts, pulled out her uterus, and left her bleeding on the floor; two arrested

NEW DELHI — Two persons were arrested after a case of gangrape and brutal torture of a tribal woman came to light in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. The tribal woman, a mother of two, was found unconscious by her daughter in a neighbouring house in the Roshni Chowki area of Khalwa, a tribal region.

Media reports reaching here on Monday quoted the police as saying that the attackers inserted an iron rod into her private parts, pulled out her uterus, and left her bleeding on the floor. Some of her body parts were found scattered beside her.

The tribal woman breathed her last before the police reached the crime scene.

The two arrested persons, Hari Palvi and Sunil Dhurve, were acquaintances of the woman and are suspected of gang rape. The woman was found lying in a pool of blood in the house of Palvi, police said.

The woman’s body has been sent for autopsy at the Khandwa district hospital. A police official said the postmortem would throw ample light on the ghastly crime.

The incident drew flak from the Congress party, the main opposition in the state. Reacting strongly, Congress chief Jitu Patwari called the crime a sign of lawlessness. In a post on X in Hindi, he said: “This level of barbaric atrocities has surpassed even the ‘jungle raj’ of the primitive era.”

He added, “Such extreme acts of audacity can only happen when the fear of law has vanished in the state! The government is silent even on this level of oppression of the girls.”

Tribals and Adivasis in the country have been facing various atrocities, including land displacement, violence, and rights violations, often due to development projects, mining, and forest conservation efforts. These communities are frequently subjected to exploitation, marginalisation, and human rights abuses, highlighting the need for stronger protections and recognition of their rights.
