HYDERABAD — A terrifying incident unfolded in Huzurnagar, Telangana on Monday, February 13, when a 23-year-old Muslim woman narrowly escaped death after a man tried to set her on fire in public. The attack occurred when Sundar Pramod, a man from the woman’s native village, allegedly poured petrol on her and attempted to ignite it.
The incident, which was captured on CCTV, shows the woman, who was dressed in a burqa, being assaulted by Pramod near her office, located near Kodar in Suryapet district. The victim, a resident of Khammam, has been living with her uncle in Huzurnagar for the past three months while working at a local office.
According to local police, Pramod had been pressuring the woman for days to marry him. She had reportedly rejected his advances. On Monday, the situation escalated when Pramod attempted to burn her alive by dousing her with petrol. Fortunately, quick-thinking locals rushed to her aid, preventing a tragic outcome and apprehending the attacker.
“We received information that a woman was attacked by a man with petrol. The locals helped her and immediately alerted the police,” said Mathia, the Senior Investigation Officer (SIG) in Huzurnagar. “The man has been arrested, and a case of attempted murder has been filed based on the woman’s complaint.”
The victim’s harrowing experience has sparked outrage, especially on social media, where the video of the incident has gone viral. One local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed disbelief at the shocking act of violence. “It was horrifying to watch. I’m just glad people stepped in to help before it was too late.”
The woman has courageously filed a formal complaint with the police, accusing Pramod of attempting to kill her. She remains in shock but is grateful for the help she received from those who intervened.
“We are investigating the incident thoroughly and will take appropriate action,” said Mathia. “The safety of women is our priority, and such acts of violence cannot be tolerated.”
