Police say Roja Ali tried to escape after snatching a weapon; family of slain teenager seeks justice as investigation into fatal attack continues
GUWAHATI — The main accused in the murder of a 19-year-old youth in Assam’s Nalbari district died during a police operation on Monday after allegedly attempting to escape and snatch a weapon from police personnel, officials said.
The accused, identified as Roj Ali, was arrested in connection with the killing of Madhuriya Barman, whose death triggered tension in the area and demands for strict action against those involved.
According to police, the incident began on Sunday when Madhuriya Barman and his sister, Mridumudra Deka, were returning to Gangapur after purchasing books in Nalbari town.
Police said the siblings were travelling on a scooter when Roj Ali and several associates allegedly stopped them. The attackers reportedly assaulted them with a sharp weapon.
Madhuriya Barman died in the attack, while his sister sustained serious injuries. She is currently undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
According to reports, the attack may have been linked to a personal dispute. Investigators are examining claims that the accused was angered after the injured woman rejected his marriage proposal. Police have not yet released an official conclusion regarding the motive.
Following the incident, police launched a large-scale search operation across Nalbari district to trace those involved in the attack.
A senior police officer said intensive searches were carried out to locate the accused and his associates.
Nalbari Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bibekananda Das confirmed that Roj Ali was injured during a police operation after allegedly attempting to attack officers and escape custody.
“The accused was shot when he tried to attack the police team during efforts to apprehend him,” Das said. “He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.”
Police said further investigation into the murder case is continuing and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend any other individuals involved in the attack.
The killing of Madhuriya Barman led to protests and demands for swift action from locals. Leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) reportedly called for strong action against those responsible.
Authorities have appealed for calm and said all aspects of the case are being investigated.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
