NEW DELHI – A Muslim employee of the Telangana government was attacked by members of a right-wing group, Hindu Vahini, for carrying files wrapped in a saffron cloth.
The employee, identified as Abdul Wakeel, works as a junior assistant at the Mandal Revenue Office in Tanoor Mandal in the state’s Nirmal District. Media reports said Abdul Wakeel was waylaid by the Hindutva mob as he carried the official files on his bike and was thrashed mercilessly.
The police in Bhainsa arrested four people and booked them under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder, Section 61(2) for criminal conspiracy, Section 121(1) for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, and Section 196(4) for actions or speech promoting disharmony, enmity, or hatred between groups. The accused have been identified as Raju, Prakash, Sai, and Polishetty, all members of the Hindu Vahini.
The video clips of the mob attacking Abdul Wakeel has gone viral. The video shows the mob stopping the government employee in the middle of the road. The mob chased him and thrashed him when he tried to flee leaving behind the files and his two-wheeler.
The mob heckled him and hurled abuses at him. The video also shows a police team arriving at the spot later and the victim showing his injury marks.
The incident has caused outrage on social media with activists questioning the Congress government for the breakdown of law and order.
Amjadullah Khan, a local political leader who posted the videos on social media, described the incident as a “total failure of law and order” in the state under Revanth Reddy’s government.
“In a series of attacks on Muslims by Hindu fanatic elements today a Govt Servant was their target, one Abdul Wakeel who was fasting and working as a Junior Assistant in Tanoor MRO Office, Nirmal District, was carrying some files wrapped in orange cloth. He was travelling on a two-wheeler in Bhainsa and was stopped and attacked by Hindutva elements with @sp_nirmal being a mute spectator,” said Khan.
He also accused the Congress government of not acting against the Hindutva groups for attacking Muslims.
“I am sure how in all previous thirty communal attacks since @INCIndia came to power in Telangana on Muslims and their assests NO action was taken against Hindutva elements, In this case also there will be no action against the attackers,” said Khan.
Congress leader and president of the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society, Faheem Qureshi, urged the Telangana DGP to take strict action against the culprits.
“Shocked by the brutal attack on Abdul Wakeel, a Junior Assistant at the Nirmal district Tanoor Mandal MRO Office, while performing his duty in Bhainsa. Targeting a government employee over baseless communal provocation is unacceptable! This cowardly act is a deliberate attempt to disturb Telangana’s peace. Even more distressing — Abdul Wakeel was fasting when he was mercilessly assaulted,” said Qureshi.
