HYDERABAD – Vedma Bhojju, Congress MLA from Khanapur constituency in Telangana, has threatened members of the Muslim community and halted the installation of the statute of former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

A 58-minute video, which went viral on Monday, shows Bhojju in heated arguments with some people and threatening to make them suffer. The video was posted by an X handle TeluguScribe Now on Monday calling the MLA’s behaviour “shocking” and “shameful”.

When a Muslim individual politely asked, “Why punish everyone for one person’s mistake? the MLA lashes out, saying:  “Obviously! You all will suffer. Remember this – I’ll make you understand who I am”!

Bhojju also used abusive words while daring people to come out and fight with him.

“The MLA’s abusive threats were made in front of the police, who failed to intervene, leaving the community in fear and shock. Is this the Congress Party’s leadership – abusing power, communal targeting, and silencing voices with intimidation,” wrote TeluguScribe.

Bhojju’s remarks have come under criticism with social media users describing him as having an “anti-Muslim” and “communal mindset.

“#Congress MLA Vedma Bhojju’s arrogance and blatant anti-Muslim remarks are deeply condemnable. Stopping the construction of a statue of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a national icon and a symbol of unity, over personal grievances reflects his #communal mindset,” said Abdullah Sohail Shaikh, a member of the Bharat Rashtriya Samiti.

He also urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to take action against the MLA while calling the party “CongRSS”.

“@RahulGandhi, the nation deserves to know: will you take action against this MLA, or will such behaviour be tolerated under your leadership? While you hold the #Constitution in your hand at the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ rally, can you explain where it allows such divisive actions and arrogance?” he said.

Shaikh further added “The Congress government in #Telangana is beginning to look like a ‘#CongRSS’ government, with its leadership openly pursuing the #antimuslim agendas. If the #ChiefMinister himself is complicit, how can other MLAs remain secular?”.

The blatantly anti-Muslim remarks from a Congress MLA go against the ethos of Congress which talks about upholding communal harmony, constitution and secularism. The grand old party often criticises the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and members for making hate speeches against the minority community. However, the Congress in Telangana has come under criticism for adopting a soft Hindutva approach. The proximity of Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also raised eyebrows.
