NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court, on Friday, came down heavily on Nupur Sharma over her intemperate comments on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) holding her squarely responsible for the ongoing communally surcharged atmosphere in the country.
The apex court refused to grant her any relief for which Sharma had approached it. On her plea to club the FIR lodged against her, the court asked her to approach relevant courts for any remedy.
Justice Surya Kumar Kant who heard the plea called Sharm’s remarks against the Prophet “disturbing” and held her responsible for “igniting emotions across the country”.
“This lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country…She and her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire,” the Supreme Court said, according to Bar and Bench adding that led to the gruesome murder of tailor in Udaipir.
The court said Sharma appears to have made the communal remarks for “cheap publicity, political agenda or for some nefarious activities.”
The judge also lashed out at the TV host for holding a debate where Sharma made the remarks.
When Sharm’s counsel, Senior advocate Maninder Singh, said she had apologised to the nation for her comments, the court retorted, “She should have gone to the TV and apologised to the nation.”
“She was too late to apologise and withdraw the statement,” the court said, underlining that her apology was conditional.
The court also hit out at Delhi Police asking why it has failed to arrest Sharma si far.
