Supreme Court on Farm Laws: Main Takeaways

NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the three contentious farm laws until further orders.

The apex court announced the decision while hearing multiple petitions challenging the validity of these laws.

According to legal news website Live Law, Chief Justice  S. A. Bobde said, “We are going to suspend the implementation of the three farm laws until further orders.

Following are main takeaways of the court order:

1. The Court will set up a committee to resolve the crisis triggered by the farm laws.

2. he court suggested four names to be on the committee

3. The Court will pass an interim order stating that farmers land can not be sold for contract farming.

4. The Court said it is concerned about only the validity of the laws

5. The court also expressed concern over life and property of citizens affected by farmers protests.

6. The Court said it  cannot ask the Prime Minister to go and meet the protesting farmers since he is not a party in the case.

7. The Chief Justice said the court will not pass any direction to stop the protests so long as they continue in a peaceful manner.

8. The Chief Justice showed  concern over participation in large numbers of old people and women and children in farmers protest amid harsh winter and COVID-19 pandemic.
