NEW DELHI – The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh questioned Maulana Mahmood Madani, President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and former member of Parliament, for close to six hours at its Lucknow headquarters on Wednesday.
The questioning was in connection with a suspected case involving fraudulent halal certification practices, according to media reports reaching here on Thursday.
Maulana Madani was asked about details of the registration of the halal trust, its various offices and the regulations for issuing halal certification, reports said.
The STF also sought details of the bank accounts of Maulana Madani. The STF also wanted to know whether the money received related to the halal certificate was taken in cash or a receipt was issued to the concerned parties.
Maulana Madani provided comprehensive responses to the questions posed by STF officials and cooperated fully with them. He emphasised his commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and transparency in the halal certification process and expressed willingness to assist authorities in uncovering any wrongdoing.
The Uttar Pradesh government recently banned halal certified products and all bodies associated with their certification.
Maulana Madani and other Jamiat officials were to appear in the case registered by Lucknow police. However, in this matter, Maulana Madani got interim relief from the Supreme Court.
In fact, the Supreme Court had on January 25 heard a petition challenging the Uttar Pradesh government’s ban on the manufacture, sale, storage, and distribution of halal certified products. The petition was filed on behalf of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Halal Trust, which was issued notice by the Supreme Court.
