Sikh Who Sold Flat for Langer at Shaheen Bagh Charged with Constable’s Murder

D R Bindra had to sell his flat to run a langar at Shaheen Bagh and Chand Bagh in Delhi to feed the women on a sit-in to protest against controversial Citizenshi Amendment Act.

Nowadays, the target of the administration is those who do good, not the ones who do wrong. We are the biggest example of this,” says Bindra’s assistant.

NEW DELHI – Remember D R Bindra, a Sikh who had hogged the limelight at the peak of CAA agitation after he admitted that he had to sell his flat to run a langar at Shaheen Bagh and Chand Bagh to feed the women on a sit-in. He has now been chargesheeted by Delhi Police in the case of murder of Constable Ratan Lal during communal violence in Delhi.

“What wrong have I done? Is serving food to the hungry a crime,” asks a deeply upset DS Bindra while giving an interview to The Quint.

Abhilash Gupta, an assistant of DS Bindra, said, “Nowadays, the target of the administration is those who do good, not the ones who do wrong. We are the biggest example of this.”

A website report quoted Bindra as saying, “I do not know about the charges, and we will be able to comment on it in a day or so, but, I have been summoned for inquiry owing to my presence in Shaheen Bagh protests.”

According to OP India, “The chargesheet said beat officers were regularly deployed in the area of protest to ensure that no law and order situation arose. After the murder of Ratan Lal, two beat officers were also questioned, and their statements recorded to ascertain facts. They revealed that Salim Khan, Salim Munna, D S Bindra, Suleman Siddiqui, Ayub, Athar, Shahdab, Upasna, Ravish and others were the organisers of the protest at the site.”

In an interview durling the langar at Shaheen Bagh protest site, Bindra had said, “Wahe Guru has asked me come here and start the langar.” He used to be a lawyer at the Karkardooma Court but left his practice for social work, Abhilash told Clarion India.

“He is quite upset at the turn of events that made him an accused in a case of murder,” he added.

Delhi Police’s chargesheet on FIR No. 60 sates, “The riots at this site was the handiwork of D S Bindra, Salman Siddiqui, Salim Khan, Salim Munna, Shahdab and Athar and others in cahoots with local rioters”,

The police have based their charges against Bindra on a number of testimonies. The first is from constables Sunil and Gyan Singh who, according to the chargesheet, were beat officers in the area.

“They are beat officers and had been regularly visiting the protest site and according to them, Salim Khan, Salim Munna, DS Bindra, Suleman Siddiqui, Ayub, Athar, Shahdab, Upasna, Ravish and others were organisers of the protest site,” the charge sheet says.

Bindra denies any involvement in the northeast Delhi violence in April this year. He categorically refutes the allegation that he took part in the violence or was the organiser of the protest.

The Quint quoted him saying, “Many Muslims tell me that they are praying for me. But they are themselves facing difficulties. I don’t know what lies ahead. All I can say is that whatever I did was for the sake of humanity.”

The chargesheet evoked a chorus of protests on the social media too. Many condemned the Delhi Police for targeting an innocent person. The common refrain among many was that whoever sides with the Muslims will meet the same fate.

Human Rights activist Umar Khalid retweeted young poet Kaushik Raj saying, “D S Bindra set up a langar at Shaheen Bagh by selling his flat. Had he chosen to keep quiet by selling his conscience, he would not have become an accused. (DS Bindra ne apna flat bech kar Shaheen Bagh me langar chalaya. Zameer Bech kar chup reh jate to aaj apradhi nahi bante)”
