Selective Targeting: Mazar Razed, Other Structures Spared in Agra Road Project

Heavy security deployment, traffic diversion and bulldozer operation on Mahatma Gandhi Road trigger concern among local Muslims

AGRA —A decades-old mazar located opposite Gokulpura on the busy Mahatma Gandhi Road in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra was demolished by the administration on Tuesday as part of a road widening project, triggering concern and resentment among members of the local Muslim community.

The demolition was carried out under heavy police presence. Senior police and administrative officials remained at the site throughout the operation, while traffic on Mahatma Gandhi Road was diverted and movement in the area was restricted.

According to local reports, the mazar was at the centre of a long-running dispute and legal proceedings. Officials stated that the action was linked to plans to widen one of the city’s busiest roads and relocate the structure.

A large number of police personnel were deployed to prevent any untoward incident. Residents said extensive security arrangements were put in place before the demolition began.

Local people also claimed that authorities did not permit the official recording of the operation by members of the public. Despite the restrictions, several residents reportedly captured photographs and videos on their mobile phones from a distance.

The action has drawn criticism from sections of the local Muslim community, who alleged that only the mazar was targeted while other religious structures along the same road remained untouched.

Residents questioned whether similar action would be taken against all structures that allegedly fall within the area of road widening.

One resident said, “If the purpose is road widening and removal of encroachments, then action should be taken equally against all religious structures on Mahatma Gandhi Road. Only the mazar has been removed.”

Members associated with the management of the mazar expressed disappointment over the development and suggested that local officials were acting under instructions received from higher authorities.

A representative of the mazar management said, “Local officers follow the orders that come from above. What else can they do? Muslims have clearly surrendered to the situation. Whatever consequences arise from removing the mazar will be the responsibility of the administration. We have left the matter to Allah.”

Despite the anger among some residents, there was no visible public protest during the demolition. Local observers said the large-scale security deployment and prevailing atmosphere discouraged open opposition to the action.

Officials, however, rejected allegations of discrimination and maintained that the demolition was carried out strictly in accordance with legal procedures.

The administration stated that the action followed due process and was linked to the ongoing road widening project. Officials denied claims that the mazar had been singled out unfairly.

The demolition has since become a major topic of discussion across Agra, with debate continuing over the manner in which the operation was conducted and whether similar measures will be applied to other structures affected by development projects.

Police remained deployed in the area after the demolition as a precautionary measure.

The incident comes amid a wider debate in Uttar Pradesh and several other BJP-ruled states regarding action against structures described by authorities as illegal encroachments. In recent months, mosques, mazars and madrasas in different parts of the country have faced investigations, demolition notices and enforcement action.

Many Muslim organisations and community members have alleged that religious sites belonging to Muslims are being disproportionately targeted. Government authorities, on the other hand, have maintained that such actions are based on legal and administrative considerations rather than religious identity.

The Agra demolition is likely to add to the ongoing discussion surrounding development projects, religious structures and the concerns being raised by minority communities regarding equal treatment under the law.
