NEW DELHI — Widespread protests erupted in the volatile Uttar Pradesh city of Sambhal on Monday after the recovery of the body of a Muslim youth in a police station.
The family of the victim, identified as Irfan, suspects foul play and alleges police torture. Media reports said Irfan was taken into custody in connection with an unspecified case.
Irfan’s body was discovered at the Rai Satti police outpost of the Nakasa police station area of the city.
His family members became inconsolable after receiving the death report. A viral video showed Irfan’s wife and parents desolately mourning the death of their loved one.

What adds a layer of uncertainty to the mysterious death of the youth is that policemen left his body unattended inside the post and reportedly fled from the area, Amar Ujala reported.
As a crowd gathered at the police post and the ruckus grew, a senior police official descended on the scene and sent Irfan’s body to a hospital for postmortem and further investigations.
The wife of the deceased claimed that the police did not assign any reason for taking Irfan into custody. She said the policemen picked him up from their home threatening him all along. “My husband felt unwell and he told the policemen about it, but he was not given any medical aid,” media reports quoted her as saying.
Media reports quoted a senior official as saying that thorough investigations will be conducted and action will be taken against those found guilty.
