DHUBRI – Congress nominee and sitting MLA Rakibul Hussain has set a new electoral record by defeating All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal in Assam’s Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency by an unprecedented margin of 10,12,476 votes.

Hussain, who serves as the deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Assam Assembly, secured a staggering 14,71,885 votes. Ajmal, contesting for his fourth consecutive term, garnered only 4,59,409 votes. The third position was held by Zubaid Islam of the Assam Gana Parishad (NDA), who received 4,38,594 votes.

“This victory is a testament to the faith that the people of Dhubri have placed in the Congress party and our vision for the future,” Hussain said. “I am honoured and humbled by this overwhelming support and am committed to working tirelessly for the development of our constituency.”

Dhubri, located along the India-Bangladesh border, saw a total of 13 candidates vying for the seat. Despite a crowded field, Hussain’s margin of victory is notable not only for its size but also for its significance in a region where Ajmal has been a dominant political figure.

Political analyst Anuradha Choudhury noted, “Hussain’s record-breaking win signals a major shift in the political landscape of Dhubri. It indicates a clear rejection of Ajmal’s long-standing leadership and a strong endorsement of Hussain’s vision and promises.”

Reflecting on the poll outcome, Ajmal said while the results were disappointing, “we respect the democratic process and will continue to serve the people of Dhubri in other capacities.”

The election outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for Assam’s political dynamics, especially given the strategic importance of Dhubri. As the results sink in, the focus now shifts to how Hussain will fulfill the high expectations set by his resounding mandate.
