Puneet, Meat Bag and Police: Timely Probe Diffuses Tension in UP’s Meerut

Police say CCTV footage exposes the truth behind a complaint that sparked concern in a village during Bakrid celebrations

MEERUT — A timely police investigation helped prevent tension in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district after a complaint regarding a bag containing meat led to concern among locals during Eid Al-Adha celebrations.

The incident took place in Mavimira village under the Daurala police station area, where police said a misleading complaint briefly created an atmosphere of anxiety before CCTV footage revealed the actual sequence of events.

The case came to light on 29 May when Puneet, son of Sainser Pal, informed a police assistance centre that a bag containing meat had been found outside his house. Given the sensitivity of the matter, police officers immediately reached the spot and began an investigation.

As news of the incident spread through the village, a large number of residents gathered at the location. The report quickly became the subject of discussion among villagers, and some people expressed concern over the discovery. Police officers appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid believing rumours until the facts were established.

Recognising the sensitive nature of the complaint, police launched a detailed inquiry and examined footage from surveillance cameras installed in the area.

According to police officials, the CCTV recordings showed that a 12-year-old boy named Mayank was riding a bicycle carrying a sack containing several packets of meat. While taking a turn on the road, one packet accidentally fell from the bicycle. The boy reportedly continued his journey without noticing that a packet had dropped.

During the investigation, police found that Puneet later picked up the packet lying on the road and placed it near the main road outside his house. He subsequently contacted the police and reported that a bag containing meat had been thrown outside his residence.

After reviewing the footage and collecting evidence, police concluded that the complaint did not accurately reflect what had happened.

A senior police official said, “The information provided to the police was found to be misleading. CCTV footage clearly established the sequence of events and helped investigators determine the facts.”

Police officials said the recovered meat was taken into custody and buried in a pit as a precautionary measure to ensure that no misunderstanding or tension developed in the village.

Following the completion of the investigation, Puneet was issued a stern warning. Police said he had been instructed not to provide false or misleading information in the future.

Officials noted that at the beginning of the inquiry, there had been a possibility that the packet had accidentally fallen from a passing vehicle or bicycle. However, the CCTV footage later clarified the entire incident and removed any doubts regarding how the packet came to be on the road.

Police emphasised that spreading false information can create unnecessary fear and disturb public order. Authorities warned that strict action may be taken against individuals who deliberately provide incorrect information with the intention of creating panic, spreading rumours or causing communal tension.

A police spokesperson said, “People should avoid spreading unverified information. Any attempt to disturb public peace or create tension through false complaints can invite legal action.”

The incident has drawn attention locally because it occurred during a period when people across the country were celebrating Eid Al-Adha. In many parts of Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere, members of different communities participated in greetings and social gatherings, reflecting longstanding traditions of communal harmony.

Officials said that due to prompt police action, careful investigation and public cooperation, peace was maintained in the village and no law-and-order situation arose.

Police have once again appealed to the public to act responsibly, verify facts before sharing information and immediately inform authorities if any suspicious incident occurs, rather than relying on rumours or assumptions.
