Two Effective Ways To Stop CAA, NRC – People Should Continue Peaceful Protests, 16 Non-BJP CMs Should Reject NRC, Says JD-U VP

NEW DELHI — Continuing his strong and clear stand against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act and government’s plan for nationwide NRC, the Vice President of Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal (United) on Sunday urged the non-BJP chief ministers of 16 states to reject NRC exercise.

Through a Sunday morning tweet, JD-U VP Prashant Kishor suggested “two effective ways to stop the implementation of CAA and NRC”.

“Keep protesting peacefully by raising your voice on all platforms and Ensure most if not all of the 16 Non-BJP CMs say NO to NRC in their states. Everything else important as they may is largely tokenism,” said JD-U leader.

Since the controversial law was passed by the Parliament on December 10, there have been nationwide protests and demonstrations – some of them turned violent, leading to police using lathi-charge and teargas shells to disperse the crowds. At some places, particularly in Assam, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, the police allegedly opened fire on the protesters killing at least 20 people, mostly in UP.

In wake of the widespread protests, five Chief Ministers — of Punjab, Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh – have declared NRC won’t be implemented in their states.

On Saturday, Prashant Kishor had attacked the Congress party for not taking part in the protests on the streets.

“Congress is not on streets and its top leadership has been largely absent in the citizens’ fight against CAA-NRC. The least party could do it to make ALL Congress CMs join other CMs who have said that they will not allow NRC in their states. Or else these statements mean nothing,” the 42-year-old poll strategist-turned-politician had said commenting on the Friday video message of Congress president Sonia Gandhi wherein she had termed the CAA as discriminatory law which will force people to stand in queue like demonetisation had done in 2016. She had also condemned police crackdown on the protests.

Meanwhile, Kishor’s consistent and strong stand against CAA and NRC forced Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday to say that NRC would not be implemented in his state. His party JD-U had supported the Citizenship Amendment Bill both in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and consequently earned huge condemnation from the civil society and some non-BJP parties.
