Legal experts point to constitutional rights and warn against exclusion based on religion in housing matters
MORADABAD — Posters discouraging residents of a residential colony in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad from selling their homes to Muslims have sparked concern, raising questions about discrimination and housing rights.
The posters appeared in Shri Ram Society in the Lajpat Nagar area under Katghar police station limits. Messages displayed outside several houses described the locality as a “completely Hindu Sanatani society” and urged that properties should be sold only to members of the Hindu community.
Residents said around two dozen posters had been put up in the colony, which has about 40 families. Some locals defended the move, saying it was aimed at maintaining what they described as religious harmony within the existing community.
One resident said, “We are around 40 families and follow our religious practices together. There is a temple in front of the colony and we organise programmes. We feel it is better if houses are sold within the same community.”
Another resident added, “If someone wants to sell a house, we will request that it be given to a Hindu family. This is our collective view.”
The development has drawn attention as such appeals raise legal and constitutional concerns. Under Indian law, discrimination in housing on the basis of religion can come into conflict with principles of equality and individual rights.
A legal expert said, “Any restriction based purely on religion may be questioned under constitutional provisions that guarantee equality and freedom. Such matters can be examined if challenged.”
There has been no official statement yet from local authorities regarding the posters. It is also unclear whether any complaint has been filed.
The issue highlights ongoing debates around housing practices and social divisions in some areas, where informal restrictions sometimes come into place despite broader legal protections.
Observers say the matter may require administrative attention to ensure that rights are protected while maintaining peace in the locality.
