The former Indian captain marks a new step in his political career after a long journey from cricket to public life and a governance role

HYDERABAD — Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who took oath as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Telangana on Monday, said he has worked hard for Congress, and will continue to serve the people with full dedication.

Azharuddin also discussed his plans for the future. “I aim to work for the development of the entire state. I want to ensure better opportunities for all sections of society, including minority communities,” he said.

The swearing-in of Azharuddin marks a significant milestone in his political career.

Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla nominated Azharuddin to the council. The Chairman of the Legislative Council administered the oath of office and secrecy to Azharuddin in the presence of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and other senior leaders.

Also sworn in during the ceremony was M Kodanda Ram Reddy, founder of the Telangana Jana Samiti.

Azharuddin, who has had a long cricket career and later moved into politics, appeared emotional after taking the oath. He said, “I thank God for this.” He added, “I am grateful to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Telangana Congress Party President Mahesh Kumar Goud for giving me this opportunity.”

Azharuddin is already serving as a minister in the Telangana government, holding the portfolio of Public Enterprises and Minority Welfare.

According to constitutional rules, a minister must become a member of either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council within six months of taking the oath. Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister in October last year, and the deadline for fulfilling this requirement was April 30. His appointment as MLC ensures compliance with this rule.

Azharuddin joined the Congress Party in 2009 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. Over the years, he has remained active in public life and party affairs. In 2018, he was appointed acting president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee.

Known for his leadership during his cricket career, Azharuddin now continues his role in public service. Leaders present at the ceremony congratulated him and expressed hope that his experience would contribute to governance in the state.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and other leaders extended their wishes after the oath. One senior leader present said, “Azharuddin brings experience and commitment. We expect him to serve the people with the same dedication he showed in cricket.”
