NEW DELHI – The installation of a signboard reading “Hari Har Mandir Marg” near Shahi Jama Masjid in the Uttar Pradesh city of Sambhal has led to rising tensions in the area. The board, installed by the Hindu organisations Harhar Sena and Bharatiya Athas Sankalp Samiti, claims the site was once home to an ancient Hindu temple, which they allege was later converted into the mosque.

Members of these organisations assert that the mosque was built on the grounds of the historical Hari Har Mandir, a claim they say is supported by evidence. “We are only seeking to highlight the truth about this place, which was once a Hindu temple,” said a representative from Harhar Sena. The group further stated that the installation of the board is part of a broader effort to restore and preserve Hindu heritage.

However, the police acted swiftly upon receiving reports of the installation. The board was promptly removed and repainted white to quell any potential unrest. Sambhal’s Superintendent of Police (SP) emphasised the priority of maintaining law and order, stating, “We will not tolerate any actions that could disturb the peace in the area.”

The incident has sparked a serious backlash from the local Muslim community. The imam of the Jama Masjid, along with other Muslim leaders, has voiced strong concerns over the act, accusing the Hindu groups of deliberately trying to create communal discord. “This is a clear attempt to disrupt the harmony between communities. The authorities must take strict action to prevent such divisive actions,” said the Imam.

Bharatiya Ithasa Sankalp Samiti, which is aligned with the claim of the Hindu organisations, defended the installation, explaining that it is part of their campaign to correct what they see as a “distorted history” from the Mughal era. “This is not an attack on any religion, but a way to revive the true legacy of India,” said a member of the Samiti.

While the Hindu organisations insist their efforts are for historical restoration, the Muslim community sees the move as a deliberate attempt to provoke and destabilise the region. As both communities await further developments, the incident continues to highlight the ongoing tensions over historical narratives and religious identity.
