NEW DELHI – Several Muslim organisations have sought permission from the authorities to use loudspeakers for azaan (call to prayers) in the Chikkamagaluru district of the southern state of Karnataka during the holy month of Ramadan, tentatively slated to begin from March 23.

These organisations have submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner K.N. Ramesh as well as BJP legislator and national General Secretary C.T. Ravi to this effect, media reports said on Tuesday

The Muslim organisations are seeking permission to use loudspeakers between 5 a.m. and 5.30 a.m. during Ramadan. The use of loudspeakers for Azaan early in the morning is prohibited in the state.

The memorandum, submitted in Chikkamagaluru on Tuesday, says: “Ramadan season is sacred for Muslim community. The month-long event is celebrated with peace, co-existence, fasting and generous donations, meticulously as per the Islamic traditions.

“Azaan is also an integral part of Ramadan. On behalf of all Muslims, we request you to allow use of loudspeakers.”

Permission to use loudspeakers is normally granted for special occasions, religious functions, sports meets during nights and early mornings. Likewise, during the sacred month of Ramadan, between 5 a.m. and 5.30 a.m., permission should be given for a maximum of five minutes for performing azaan, the memorandum stated.

It is to be noted that Karnataka State Wakf Board has issued a notification prohibiting the use of loudspeakers in mosques and dargahs between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
