One Million in Southern Gaza Trapped Without Clean Water, Sanitation: WFP

People want a ceasefire, and they want dignity back, WFP’s Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau says

GENEVA – A million displaced people are trapped amid a “shocking” level of “destruction” in southern Gaza, deputy executive director of the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) Carl Skau has said.

A “public health and protection disaster” is unfolding there, he said. The populace suffers from a lack of potable water or sanitation facilities, he added.

At the end of a two-day mission to Gaza, Skau said the challenges faced by humanitarian workers are “like nothing I have ever seen.” Fighting has escalated in the south and the centre of Gaza, which is taking a devastating toll on the civilian population.

“From the south to the northernmost tip of the strip, people are traumatised and exhausted,” he said in a post on social media.

“People want a ceasefire, and they want dignity back,” Skau said in a video interview.

Skau also warned that the continued hostile operating environment makes it near-impossible for humanitarian operations to deliver desperately needed food aid. – Agencies
